New President plans membership push
Professor Peter Warr, Head of the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, has been named as the new President of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES).
Warr, a Distinguished Fellow of the Asia and the Pacific Policy Society and the John Crawford Professor of Agricultural Economics, is the 57th President of AARES since its formation in 1956. AARES is an independent association of academics and organisations engaged in agricultural, resource and environmental economics.
Warr said that he was excited to be named the new president, and hoped to use his one-year term to try and increase membership of the organization.
“The aim of my period as President is two things,” he said.
“Firstly, to extend the society’s outreach beyond Australia and into the Asia Pacific area. Secondly, I want to try and get more young people, and especially females, involved with the activities of the society. For the future of the society we have to regenerate the membership to include more younger people.”
Professor Warr’s term as President will run until February 2014.
